ABOUT Ankle Sprains

The ankle joint is made up of the articulation of several bones of the lower leg which are connected by ligaments and muscles to help stabilize the joint. An ankle sprain can occur when the ankle joint is twisted or “rolled” into a compromising position, stretching or tearing the ligaments and muscles that hold the joint in place.

Ligaments help stabilize joints, preventing excessive movement. A sprained ankle occurs when the ligaments are forced beyond their normal range of motion. Most sprained ankles involve injuries to the ligaments on the outer side of the ankle.

Treatment for a sprained ankle depends on the severity of the injury. Although self-care measures and over-the-counter pain medications may be all you need, a medical evaluation might be necessary to reveal how badly you’ve sprained your ankle and to determine the appropriate treatment.*

CAUSES OF Ankle Sprains

A sprain occurs when your ankle is forced to move out of its normal position, which can cause one or more of the ankle’s ligaments to stretch, partially tear or tear completely.

Causes of a sprained ankle might include:

  • A fall that causes your ankle to twist
  • Landing awkwardly on your foot after jumping or pivoting
  • Walking or exercising on an uneven surface
  • Another person stepping or landing on your foot during a sports activity

SYMPTOMs OF Ankle Sprains

Call your doctor if you have pain and swelling in your ankle and you suspect a sprain. Self-care measures may be all you need but talk to your doctor to discuss whether you should have your ankle evaluated. If signs and symptoms are severe, you may have significant damage to a ligament or a broken bone in your ankle or lower leg.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

We have several options to help relieve the pain of a sprained ankle as well as help promote healing of the affected tissues. Chiropractic adjustments of the hip and knee can help correct alignment and reduce pressure on the irritated structures.

Electrical stimulation therapy can help relax the muscles associated with the affected area. Radial pulse wave therapy can help decrease muscle tension and stiffness allowing motion to help the healing of the affected tissues.

Class 4 laser can help to reduce the inflammation in the area and promote tissue healing of the ligaments. Home stretches and exercises may also be prescribed in order to break up adhesions and promote proper biomechanics. Once the acute phase of the ankle sprain subsides, custom orthotics may be helpful to restore proper arch in the foot and stabilize the ankle joint to reduce the risk of reinjuring the joint.
