Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a very common condition leading to pain in the bottom of the foot. It is driven by inflammation of the plantar fascia, which is a tough, fibrous band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot.

The plantar fascia attaches to the heel bone and runs all the way to the base of the toes. It helps support the normal arch of the foot and plays a big part in maintaining normal foot mechanics while walking and standing. The biggest causes of plantar fasciitis are standing on hard surfaces for extended periods of time and repetitive motions like running or walking.

ABOUT PLANTAR FASCIITIS

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common foot ailments with over 3 million cases diagnosed each year. The primary symptom of plantar fasciitis is a pain in the bottom of the food often focused around the heel. This pain is a result of inflammation in the plantar fascia. As the inflammation persists, the surrounding area can become very tender to the touch. It also makes it very hard to stand on that foot without pain.

Pain is generally most prominent in the morning when standing and taking the first few steps of the day. Anytime the area is allowed to rest for more than a few minutes inflammation can build up again and standing and walking will hurt. Foot pain can develop from a number of different issues besides plantar fasciitis. Other diagnoses that lead to foot pain are:

-Sprained ligaments and strained muscles
-Neuropathy from diabetes
-Radiculopathy from a pinched nerve in the low back

These are conditions we also have treatments for at Blue Mountain Wellness!

CAUSES OF PLANTAR FASCIITIS

The main cause of plantar fasciitis is repetitive activity placing stress on the feet. When standing places weight on the foot, the plantar fascia must stretch to support the arch of the foot.

This tension also increases when you push off on the ball of the foot and toes, which happens when walking or running. With repetitive overuse or over long periods of time, the fascia gets injured and can become irritated by routine daily activities. Weight can also be a compounding factor in developing plantar fasciitis.

Unfortunately, each of the causes listed above will stress the foot even more if a person is overweight or obese leading to an increased chance of developing the condition. Another huge risk factor is working on a hard surface for extended periods of time. Jobs that force you to stand on hard floors dramatically increase the stress placed on the plantar fascia. Over time, that chronic stress on the feet can cause inflammation to accumulate leading to plantar fasciitis.
