ABOUT Chronic Inflammation

We have all sprained an ankle and experienced the swelling that occurs when this happens. But what is actually going on during this process? Inflammation is the body’s natural response to heal itself after an injury, infection, or when the body has been exposed to toxins.

Anytime a cell in the body is damaged the body releases chemicals that trigger an immune system response. This response is inflammation. This process involves the release of antibodies and proteins as well as increased blood flow to the damaged area. This process typically only lasts a few hours to a few days. When the inflammatory process proceeds to linger for  months or even years, this leaves your body in a constant state of alert. This is called chronic inflammation.

There are a  multitude of causes of chronic inflammation with the most common being an untreated cause of acute inflammation such as an infection, an autoimmune disorder, which involves your immune system attacking healthy tissue, or long term exposure to harmful chemicals or irritants. In  our office, we most commonly see chronic inflammation linked to the gut.

We know this to be called leaky gut. Leaky gut is a form of chronic inflammation in the stomach and intestines that is most commonly linked to smoking, obesity, alcohol, chronic stress, and eating a lot of processed foods, gluten, sugar, and dairy. This form of chronic inflammation can cause joint and muscle pain throughout the whole body

Great atmosphere. Friendly staff that makes you feel welcomed.

Risk Factors

People at risk for chronic inflammation include those who smoke, consume alcohol, are obese, and consume high amounts of processed foods, sugar, gluten, and dairy. Other risk factors include those who work around harmful industrial chemicals and polluted air, have thyroid conditions, or overgrowth of yeast or Candida in the gut.

The most common symptoms associated with chronic inflammation in the body include: fatigue, fever, mouth sores, rashes (or any other skin condition such as eczema), abdominal pain, chest pain, bloating ( even after drinking a glass of water or eating a small meal), joint pain, headaches, trouble focusing, and trouble sleeping. These symptoms can range from mild to severe and can last for several months or even years.

A diagnosis of chronic inflammation can be done by consulting your doctor. Typically, blood tests will be done to determine whether or not you have chronic inflammation. Here at Blue Mountain Wellness, our doctors will sit down with you one-on-one and discuss your symptoms in detail and give you some take-home testing to determine whether or not you have chronic inflammation.

Our doctors focus on the three most common factors of chronic inflammation in the gut: hypothyroidism, overgrowth of Candida (yeast) in the gut, and issues with your adrenal glands. Schedule your appointment today with one of our highly trained doctors to determine if you have chronic inflammation today.
